In 1650, a navigator named Francisco Ayres da Cunha, portugues, coming from his country to expand colonies on the Brazilian Coast, broke his ship due to the stranding on rocks near the region of "Ponta Grossa".
Looking for a way out, finally the ship fails in Canoa Quebrada, and more exactly at the tip of the Estevão (ponta do Estêvão.) His ship in bad conditions was given to the master Simon (Simão) who was living in Aracati. The fishmen of the village didn't know anything else except small boats, canoes and jangades; When they came to repair the ship, they said : "We will broke the Canoe". From this time, the name of Canoa Quebrada appeared.
